2285 The Life and Times of John England First Bishop of Charleston (1786-1842) Vol. I, by Peter Guilday (read 10 Apr 1990) England was born in 1786 in Ireland, ordained in 1808 and appointed Bishop in 1820. This is a 1927 book written by a professor of Church History at Catholic U. It is an excellent book and I found it extremely interesting. England was an excellent bishop, who had a very hard time. There were two priests in his diocese when he came, and he went around organizing Catholics into congregations. He did not get along with Archbishop Marechal, second archbishop of Baltimore, since England felt Frenchmen made poor American bishops. This book I have found really interesting reading.
