To tell the truth I had expected another book from the blurb.Something witty and Heyer-like.
The heroine was too wrapped up in her infatuation with her stepbrother and only agrees to marry the hero when it seems she might end up an old maid otherwise.Maybe an effort to make a more realistic heroine. But I was already ambivalent in my feelings toward her(she was a little bit too cold) and this didnt make it better. No matter how realistic.
I mean thats the basis for most of Austens work, the need to get married. But here it was done a little bit too harsh.
A bit too much Sense and not enough Sensibility if you catch my drift.
Anyways the stepbrother returns from the war with his beautiful and rich (but silly) fiancee.
She soons sets out to make changes to the house, making herself a nuisance and the heroine realizing that there is no way she can live in the house while the fiancee is lady of the house.
Luckily a long time friend of the family(our hero,Victor) makes her an offer of marriage wich she accepts begrudingly.
At this point the hero has been kind of courting her for 3 years(he just didnt make it clear and the heroine doesnt know he is courting her.Though everyone else can see it
The heroine thinks hes stuffy and hes always critizing her actions.I like the sardonic heroes but what girl want a guy who nitpicks at her the whole time?
In all not very romantic and while it had some few scenes that were witty,it contrasted in a bad way everytime there is a romantic scene the hero manhandles the heroine "crushing her lips to his"
When something similar happened in nearly every "romantic" scene I was offput. Too much submitting and bearing it on the heroines part too.
What I did like was the outspoken little sister and the half-deaf grandfather.Made me smile a bit.
Sadly not a recommend though, but it just wasnt for me… (más)
