David H. Greene was born in Boston, Massachusetts on November 4, 1913. He received a B. A. in 1936, a M. A. in 1937, and a Ph.D. in 1939, all in literature from Harvard University. During World War II, he served as a Navy intelligence officer in Britain. After the war, he joined the English faculty mostrar más at New York University. He retired in 1979, but continued to lecture until 1985. He was a leading scholar of Irish literature and along with Edward M. Stephens wrote the book J. M. Synge, 1871 - 1909 about the playwright who was at the forefront of the Irish literary renaissance. He also edited or co-edited An Anthology of Irish Literature, One Thousand Years of Irish Prose, and The Matter with Ireland. He died from pneumonia on July 9, 2008. 2137 J. M. Synge 1871-1909, by David H. Greene and Edward M. Stephens (read 22 Mar 1988) Synge was born 16 Apr 1871 in a place known as Newtown Villas, then in the country but now a Dublin suburb. He was of a Protestant family, but he did not go to church after 18, to his mother's great distress. He died in March of 1909. I read this because I was intending to see a production of The Playboy of the Western
world and thought I should know something of his life. The book is well-done, though Synge had a short tough life, and much ill-health. But it is an interesting time, and made me feel I should read more about Yeats.… (más)
