The “Midwife’s Promise” is a story of a grandmother's decision to raise her grandson as her own after Germany takes control of Lyon, France. Sophie Hansen takes her calling of being a midwife very seriously despite the risk of detainment by German soldiers. As the war continues, Sophie is asked to help children escape German controlled France since the convent is no longer safe. Sophie’s Daughter, Camille chooses to remain in Lyon after marrying Jean-Luc, a successful business man despite Germany’s presence. Camille becomes pregnant and asks her mother to return to Lyon after sensing something is not right. Sophie’s return sparks a chain reaction leading to Camille and her in-laws fleeing Lyon for safety.

Eliza Grahams takes readers to Germany’s occupation of France where fear runs rampant. Eliza’s character of Sophie and Camille encompasses a loving mother and daughter’s relationship when Sophie returns to help Camilla deliver her babies. Eliza convey’s the frustration Camilla feels when she isn’t able to embrace her mother when she responds to her daughters call for help. Sophie is referred to a midwife to keep her true identity hidden as one who helps Jewish children escape to freedom. I am a fan of historical fiction and enjoyed this book very much.

5 stars, Comfort Amid Atrocities

THE MIDWIFE'S PROMISE
by Eliza Graham

In a dual timeline, Sophie tells us her story, from WWII in France, and from 1992. She is a midwife and does all she can to help the mothers and babies in her care. It isn't always easy, sometimes it is just plain hard to do. She helps anyone she comes across, at great risk to herself.

Highly recommend. Promises and secrets, both go hand in hand.

This read was full of emotions, yes, we all know about the evil the perpetrated Europe in the 1930's and 40's, but through the author's words we put faces on these people. This story takes place in France and we meet those that put their lives on the line to help thwart the enemy and help those who are hated.
Sophie is a midwife and more, and she gives all she has to help those in need. When a message comes that her daughter needs her, she goes with great danger to her. In the end it was a good thing she did.
Loved how we as humans tend to judge people, and like others Sophie ended up being wrong about what she thought about some people, but she was so right about others. She held on to secrets for over 50 years, and we are there when Paul gets what he never knew he was missing.
Keep the tissues handy this one will grip your heart!
I received this book through Net Galley and Storm Publishing, and was not required to give a positive review.

At first glance, this is yet another dual time line story set in modern day and in France during World War II. What the reader gets is so much more than that. This is a book about love, respect, family and betrayal in both time periods. It has strong loving families, a bit of mystery and a bit of romance - what more can you ask for in a good book.

Present time: Morane and her sister, Gwen. both adored their grandmother, Rozenn. She was always there for the sisters, took them to Paris and her home in Cornwell was their favorite place to visit. She was a strong but isolated woman who refused to talk about her past. When she died, she left her beautiful home in to Gwen and only left a gold compass to Morane. Morane was devastated at the turn of events but decided to make the best of it and help her sister redecorate the house. She finds some pictures and a partial letter that she's never seen before and decides to find out more about her grandmother's past in France during the war. What she finds is painful and she must learn to live with the truth.

1941. Rosenn and her family move from Paris to a small town in Brittany to save her brother from being put back into the German army or into a camp. As the family tries to keep her brother hidden, they are surrounded by German troops and nosy neighbors who want to learn more about the doctor's family that has moved from Paris. Rosenn's brother means the world to her and she starts working with some shady characters to get her brother out of France and safely to England. The deeper she gets into her plans, the more dangerous it becomes for her family. When she makes a split second decision, it changes the course of her entire life and that of her family.

This was an interesting look at a grandmother and her granddaughter and how they approached their lives and losses. I preferred the modern day story to the WWII story because I didn't particularly like Rosenn but I understood how the regrets of past affected the person that she became. The two story lines are both well written and give us more of an understanding of both women and their connections in different times.

My only problem with his book is that the first 20% is very slow. I almost gave up reading it but am very glad that I kept on and was rewarded with a great story.
