For those going into medicine as a career, this book is a good reference. For those just wanting an insight to details of a doctor's work, it is not as interesting due to its written style. Most chapters end with " ...in the next chapter I will discuss..." Flipping the page, the chapter begins with "In this chapter I will discuss..." This is the rather stuffy style throughout the book, still fine though for those serious about the career.

The author stresses two main inputs to desire to enter the profession, hereditary or genetic, and environmental. He gives numerous examples of this. he also is very religious and co the Catholic input is very front and center, often going into what the author heard back from God about career choices.

Toward the end of the book the author describes how most in the career also take on community responsibilities with needy organizations. He also gives about a dozen physicians space to describe how they decided to enter the career.

The author likes poetry.

At the end is a very long list of thanks to family members, communities, associates, mentors, and others who he feels are essential to the memoir and some of the career choices he has made. Rate this book higher if you are serious about the career of medicine, or use this rating if you are just curious about the lives doctors live and challenges they face from school through retirement.
