3.5 stars - I felt this would have been better as a collection of short articles. It read kinda clunky to me as it was part memoir, part advice, part interviews.

This book disappointed me because I had hoped to hear more about the dominatrixes and less of the author's voice. It is a personal narrative of a newcomer's experience with BDSM--which would have been OK, except that the author is not a great writer. There are rambling passages about her youth and her innermost fantasies that did not interest me at all, and the book is not structured logically.

I wish the author had focused more on the professional dommes, whose strong, complex characters sound absolutely fascinating. Examples include the Baroness, who runs a latex clothing store in NY and could probably write her own book based on the number of fun quotes in this work, and Mistress Velvet, a woman of color who labels the financial tributes from her submissive clients as reparations.

One of the most provocative, subversive, and inspirational quotes in the book is something the author does not even bother to explore: Gloria Brame says, "I think every woman needs to remember that there are no 'shoulds.' That's what's really cool about BDSM for women--it introduces a totally novel concept into female sexuality...which is anarchy."

Recommended for readers who are new to BDSM and/or enjoy personal, anecdotal narratives.
