These stories explore the relationship between scientific discoveries and the human condition. They introduce some interesting concepts and it feels very different from other short story collections as there aren't a whole lot of non-sci fi stories out there using things like the Theory of Relativity as a metaphor for a dysfunctional relationship. It's a truly ambitious effort to bring scientific themes into high-minded literature. Perhaps it was overly ambitious as the quality of the stories is a bit uneven with some being quite compelling and others feeling a little overwrought or a bit forced. Still, I highly enjoyed the themes explored and I will gladly pick up more stories by Pippa Goldschmidt in the future.… (más)

This was a First Reads giveaway. This is a debut if I am not mistaken, and if that is the case, well done. I did not feel particularly engaged, but at the same time something kept drawing me back to the book and I read it quite quickly. There was some graphic sex, not entirely necessary IMHO. In a way it reminds me a bit of [b:The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry|13227454|The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry|Rachel Joyce|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1335816092s/13227454.jpg|18156927], in the way that a family withdraws from one another after a tragedy. The cover artwork is very lovely also. I enjoyed it and wish the author well on her future projects.… (más)

I like the voice and style of this writing. I thought the stories were showing the more complex side of emotional attachment in cultures that don't trust emotions. It was easy for me to relate to in that I can see these rules of engagement at my work too and it was entertaining to see characters befuddled by the non-logic of emotion.
