The People We Hate at the Wedding, while well-written - although at times so wordy I got lost - was just plain boring. There were some very graphic scenes that almost seemed out of place in comparison to the rest of the humdrum tone of the book.
As for the plot, it was really simple: a dysfunctional family comes together at sibling's wedding. That's about it. The sister is screwing her boss, which of course, doesn't end well, the brother lives with his horrible narcissistic partner who doesn't believe in monogamy (this one doesn't turn out well either), and the eldest sister is spoiled and doesn't really 'get' real life. Mom is still clinging to hope of a reunion with her ex-husband, eldest sister's dad. In the last few pages, everything wraps up as expected.
Why a 4/5 you might ask? Because I give a 3 if you can write and finish and publish a book; it is not easy. I give a 5 when the book is good all around, not just the writing but the plot. A 4 comes along when the book is meh but still deserves a nod because it is well-written. The People we Hate at the Wedding, we well-written.
