This is a collection of poems, each a short vignette of a Goddess, monster or mortal. Some tell of their nature, others of specific instances. Some even take the immortals and put them in a mortal world, how would they cope, how would it have mellowed them. They are variable in length and there is a requirement to be fairly up on your mythology, or some of the names and back stories will be missing (a couple threw me, I admit). The best are those torn between two opposing forces, Persephone, for example. It was noticeable that the monsters are all female - difficult women seem to have been vilified for all time.
I listened to this, I'd quite like to see a copy, I think it might be interesting to see how it is arranged on the page.

“Every love does not have to be made of desire. Some loves are kept for the people who stand by you through everything. Some soulmates are sisters not lovers. Some loves are for those who give you hope. And some for the strength, for wisdom, for dreams.”

“Why be a half-finished poem in some forgotten poet’s story, when one can be an odyssey in and of herself, part magic, part villain, part Goddess, part lover.”

EMPOWERED! That's exactly how I feel while and after reading Nikita Gills rendition of fairy tales. I was always a fan of fairy tales growing up and now that I think of it, almost all of them were sold on female leads (the princesses) but they were shown as weak and fragile, made of paper and waiting for their prince charming to save their lives. We never even got to think of the story from the other characters point of view because of how beautiful the princess and her dress was. Nikita Gill changed that for me. Not only has she rewritten the fairy tales from the point of view of other characters but also did an amazing job at questioning the age old norms and discussing taboos the way no one ever has. If you haven't read this book, pick it up because no matter your gender, you will finish this book feeling strong, powerful and moved.… (más)

This was my first read of 2021 and I couldn't have started with a better book. It was empowering, eye opening, beautifully written and highly captivating. I loved everything about it. The flow of the story that Nikita Gill took us through, the way she re-enforced my belief and devotion, the feeling of power she left me with by the time I reached the end deserve more than 5 starts and multiple reads. In what I can only describe as an enchanting manner, she drew examples from the Indian mythology to remind us how God has never even hinted on discrimination. It doesn't matter if you are a girl or a boy, love a girl or a boy or both, come from a rich or a poor or a mediocre background, we all have a fire inside of us and nothing but ourselves can stop us from finding it and making it shine bright. Simply Loved the book.… (más)
