A storybook by pop-surrealist Camille Rose Garcia, featuring her trademark pirate-girl heroine, the Peppermint Man as the twisted villain, and a number of adorably sad sea-creatures, all attempting to help Lulu (the heroine) to save the last refuge of the animals and pirates from the Industrial takeover of the world, that has supplanted every natural, beautiful thing with power plants and industrial waste.

I wanted this book FOREVER. I saw it in the stacks at Newbury Comics in Boston, flipped through it and didn't buy it because I was broke and it was expensive.

But it imprinted itself on my brain. Every time I went to Newbury Comics for the next month, I'd flip through this book- the single copy of this book that they had. Each time, I left it behind.

Until, one day, it was gone. And I couldn't remember exactly what the title was, or exactly what the artist's name was, but the instant it was gone, I HAD to have it.... so the search began.

It ended this Christmas (2006) when my love gave it to me as a gift. Yay!

Garcia's artwork is very reactionary to her childhood, growing up among the underprivileged of Anaheim, CA in the shadow of Disneyland. The delirious, dark, cartoony fantasy of her work looks like Disney's antithesis- a frothy, candy colored realm of nightmares, where happy endings are the fairy tale.

One of the flagship artists of the JUXTAPOZ magazine/ Pop Surrealism movement.
