'How can I burn candles in a manner which will bring me the most satisfaction and consolation?'

In order to answer that question it is necessary to eliminate all technical, dry and often times torturous historical background. It is necessary to sift and sort every fact, scrutinize every detail, search for the kernal.

It is hoped that this volume answers that question in a manner which is satisfactory to the reader. It has been necessary, of course, to include some historial data and other anthroplogical data in order to better illustrate the symbolism involved in modern candle burning as practised by so many people today.

This data has been accumulated from many sources; it has been culled from literally hundreds of books and aritcles. The modern rituals outlined here are based upon practices which have been described by mediums, spiritual advisors, evangelists, religious interpreters, neologists and others who should be in a position to know.

It has been the author's desire to interpret and explain the basic symbolism involved in a few typical exercises so that the reader may recognize this symbolism and proceed to develop his own symbolism in accordance with the great beauty and highest ethics of the art.

Collection of Evelyn Carr, 2942 DeSoto Way, Columbus, Indiana47201. Later, 406 Eastern Drive, Chesterfield, Indiana 46017-1206. These books are from my mother’s collection. She was a noted practicing medium at Historic Camp Chesterfield in Indiana.

The object of this present volume is to serve a three-fold purpose:

First, to present an abbreviated, humanized birograph of the Man Moses in such form as to make him seem alive rather than a cold, mythical personage out of a fairy tale.

Second, there are some who may criticize the title of this book, saying that only the first five Books of the Old Testament belong to Moses; that there were no Sixth and Seventh Books of Moses, not any additional books by the Great Man.

If you have been inclined to this view, Book Two of this volume may give food for thought. The conclusions set forth are not my own but the consensus of opinions arrived at independently by many learned students of religion of the Ancient Nation of Israel and of the Old and New Testaments. From this testimony it can be concluded that it is just as accurate to say that Moses wrote ten books as it is to limit him to the authorship of only the first five books of the Old Testament.

Third, in Book Three of this volume, which your author has entitled: 'The Book of Miscellaney,' have been assembled many of the nostrums used in the period under discussion. These are presented so that the reader may have a greater insight into the character of these people; that their everyday habits may be analyzed; that their fundamentally religious instincts may be measured to some degree. Finally, they are presented for comparision with many customs, superstitions, traditions, prayers and nostrums which many readers will recognize as bearing a striking similarity to those which exist and are practised even today.

When all has been summed up it will be seen that despite all of our modern science, all of our book learning, all of the changes which have been brought about in the past 4000 years, human nature itself changes not at all and that those ancients of the misty past are but our next door neighbors of today.
