This is a brutal story about a toxic relationship. In that way, it's an old story, but one that obviously hasn't been told enough. Gallo's storytelling is powerful and compelling. However, I do think the text would benefit greatly from an English-language editor. If English readers can look beyond the syntax issues, they'll definitely feel this one, not just read it.
War is hell and so is high school. I WILL KILL YOU IN MY DREAM, set in Croatia as Gallo's previous works have been, is part CARRIE and part THE CRAFT in that it focuses primarily on young women who experience all the drama of high school relationships, and one young woman in particular who seems to be capable of predicting future tragedies in her sleep.
Gallo is showing promise with her storytelling as she continues to write. This particular story reads a bit like a high schooler's diary entry, or notes passed between friends, even though it is intended as a third-person omniscient narrative. The tale might be stronger if the author showed the reader who the characters are instead of telling us. I have no doubt that Gallo will master that technique as she continues to write.… (más)
