I can't really explain why the style of writing was so irritating, but that is what I found. The author has used so many descriptive words and so many cliched phrases in every sentence that it is difficult to actually make out the story. He exaggerates the things that are happening almost to extremes, constantly suggesting that the end is about to happen and emphasising the grave danger or the catastrophe that may befall him. But, then, it doesn't. There is also way too much detail about mundane activities with his friends that don't have anything to do with climbing. He uses strong emotion to describe everything as well, it is over the top.
My family members that read it said the same. They didn't get on with it either. There are a few swear words but nothing seriously offensive in the first few chapters.
This book may appeal to avid climbers but only if they can navigate the style issues. I'm rating this 2 rather than 1 but it was a close call.
