- Melanie Finn was born and raised in Kenya. In 1976, she moved to Connecticut with her family. After graduating from New York University, she worked as a journalist and screenwriter on four different continents. Her first novel, Away From You, was long-listed for the Orange Award and the IMPAC Award. Shortly after her marriage to the wildlife filmmaker, Matt Aeberhard, they moved to the remote Lake Natron are of Tanzania, where she wrote and produced the NatureDisney's Crimson Wing: Mystery of the Flamingos. Her second novel, The Gloaming (published as Shame in the UK) was a New York Times Notable Book and short-listed for the Vermont Book Award. The Underneath, a literary thriller set in Vermont, is out in hardback from May 2018. In her non-writing life, Melanie co-founded the Natron Healthcare Project which brings sustainable health care to the communities of Lake Natron. She currently lives in Vermont with Matt, their twin daughters, three old horses, two old dogs, one fat rabbit, two rats, two budgies, and a hermit crab named Shelby.
