Little Kid Reaction: We tried reading this with our 8-year old many times. She didn't like the pictures, sos he wouldn't read the book.

Big Kid Reaction: The first six pages to introduce the characters, and after a short break we get four more pages of characters. That's a lot of time spent describing pieces of a computer, rather than telling a story. The author gives them "human" traits (Joy, the girl plays with dolls) to tell the story itself.

Pros: If you're looking for a book to introduce computer terms to kids, this is a good selection.

Looking for an interesting way to introduce young children to the Internet? Then look no further than this charming story by Craig T. Feigh.

Little Bit, his older brother, Big Byte, and his little sister, Joy, set out for a day at the beach in Cyberville. Joining them are their dog, Click, and their cat, Browser.

There's a sandcastle-building contest today, so the siblings begin to build the best sandcastle they can. They are soon joined by their friends, Webster and Kay Board.

But danger looms on the beach, too, when two nefarious characters, Vi and Russ, urge Big Byte and Kay Board to "hang ten" and surf Web Beach. A bad outcome is narrowly avoided when a lifeguard warns that there are many Vi and Russ's out there just waiting to ruin your fun.

The author manages to introduce computers, the Internet, and Web surfing in a way that is fun and easy to understand for even the youngest of computer users. And with a hidden bone on each page adding to the fun, this is a great book for parents and children to read together.

As someone who works in the software industry, Little Bit & Big Byte caught my attention immediately. I really liked the idea of a picture book for my children that related back at least indirectly to my profession. I read this through the first time by myself. It wasn’t what I was anticipating and I wasn’t sure that it would capture my daughters’ attention. I was wrong. They enjoyed the story, the characters, and started learning some vocabulary that will help them as they get older.

At the beginning of the book, the narrator, Little Bit, introduced his dog Click, his cat Browser and his siblings, Big Byte and Joy. Of all the characters, Webster was the favorite. They both thought it was silly that he was shaped like a dictionary. They also seemed to grasp the concept that they should stay away from Vi and Rus. Best of all, when Little Bit told us that Big Byte was 8, Allison asked why he was 8, it was a teachable moment. It really made me happy to explain that there are 8 bits in a byte. It might mean nothing to her today, but it helped to lay the groundwork.

Little Bit & Big Byte is a great way to start introducing children to basic computer concepts and vocabulary. Not only is a good picture book to have at home, it would also be a good resource for preschool and early elementary school educators.
