Biografía breve
Glynnis Fawkes is a cartoonist and illustrator.

She says on her website: I am currently working on a graphic adaptation of Eric Cline’s 1177 BC The Year Civilization Collapsed for Princeton University Press, to be published in 2024.

Charlotte Bronte Before Jane Eyre, in the Center for Cartoon Studies Presents series, was published in September 2019 by Disney/Hyperion. Also in September, Secret Acres published Persephone’s Garden, a collection of autobiographical comics that have appeared in The New Yorker and other places.

I began working on excavations as illustrator in 1998 and have worked on sites in Greece, Crete, Turkey, Israel, Cyprus, Syria, and Lebanon. My illustrations have been published in man books and articles.

A Fulbright to Cyprus in 1999 led to the publication of two books in 2001, Archaeology Lives in Cyprus (Bank of Cyprus) and Cartoons of Cyprus (Moufflon Press)

Many of my personal comics reflect a career in archaeology and family life. Greek Diary is about working on a dig and traveling with children and won the Society of Illustrators MoCCA Arts Festival Award in 2017. My drawings about my children were published regularly on Muthamagazine.com and were nominated for an Ignatz Award at the Small Press Expo in 2016.

Another project, Alle Ego (out of print for now) is about my first trip to Greece and how it launched my work in the direction of archaeology. A draft of this book won the Society of Illustrators MoCCA Arts Festival Award in 2016. I drew most of it during a residency at La Maison des Auteurs in Angouleme in 2015. I returned for another residency in 2018 and was set to go again in 2020.

In 2019 I joined the faculty at the venerable Center for Cartoon Studies in White River Junction, VT.

A grab bag of short strips published in various places over the last decade. The more interesting bits involve Fawkes making archeological illustrations of pottery on the site of ancient Troy and coping with her mother's Alzheimer's. And there is a very funny story of Charlotte Brontë attending a modern day yoga class. (I did not realize until the end of the book that Fawkes also created the enjoyable Charlotte Brontë Before Jane Eyre which I read just a few months ago. I should have recognized the art style . . . )

Unfortunately, between the good bits are a lot of boring sketchbook pages, mundane travel diaries, and way, way too many "kids say the darndest things" gags featuring her son and daughter, who come off more bratty than cute. The kid strips also bring up a privacy issue as the author explicitly states in the introduction that her children have asked her to stop posting them but that she intends to continue to do so despite their expressed humiliation. It reminded me of this article:

By the way, if you are intrigued by the tapestries of the mother, Judith Poxson Fawkes, here's a page with eight of them in full color:

Some of the author's father's work can be found here:

Bottom line, an uneven work by an interesting talent. I'll certainly seek out more by her in the future.

Jane Eyre is one of my all-time favorite books, so I was quite happy to come across this graphic novel biography of Charlotte Brontë. It's quite well done and offers many glimpses into the real-life moments that Brontë included in her novel. Having just read Little Women it's also fascinating to see the many parallels that exist with that book and its author's real life.
