Matias Faldbakken

The waiter is a hidebound traditionalist working at one of Oslo's foremost dining establishment, The Hills. He exists to serve, but also has high expectations of his guests and his colleagues in terms of their conduct within The Hills' hallowed environs.

At the outset, the waiter is a man in command of his surroundings, albeit under pressure. His equilibrium begins to be disturbed when a beautiful ingenue his thinks of as Child Lady arrives and starts breaching protocols, such as showing up an hour late and ordering quadruple espressos. Child Lady begins to exert her charms on other regular guests and the increased departures from the waiter's stiff, formal routines begin to leave him frazzled and his equilibrium starts a steady slide into chaos.

This idea has the makings of a very good comedy in the style of Wodehouse, for example, or of a neat parable about the folly of tradition for the sake of it in a modern world. Sadly, it is neither; it is just a character study about the gradual discombobulation of somebody that the author doesn't really succeed in making you care about anyway.… (más)

I heard about this book on the Strong Sense of Place podcast (Restaurant episode). I found the audio on Hoopa.

The narrator--who spoke slowly and rather blandly--might have been part of the reason I didn't enjoy it. But it generally I do not enjoy judgy-old-men books. I also am not familiar with this style of restaurant and have never been a recognized regular at a restaurant, so there might be jokes or observations that I completely missed here.

I was confused by his many "serving errors" when not in particularly busy or crowded times. Is that meant to show his age catching up to him? Or his actual incompetence?

Matias Faldbakken : Wij zijn met vijf
Recensies: Noorse prijs ; heel geprezen beeldende kunstenaar en schrijver.
Avontuur, mythologie en sciencefiction met een dosis rauw realisme. Nonchalante schrijfstijl.
Voor mij is het verhaal een jeugdboek, met een zekere spanning.
Dus mythologie, Bildung-karakter, met ironie… ????? Men noemt dit een ‘bildungsroman’ : ???
De beschrijving als een magisch-realistisch verhaal met een zekere absurditeit , is correct.
Psychologie : verkeerde vrienden, een halfslachtig gezinsleven met een niet-geïnteresseerde echtgenote en moeder, het verlies van controle over een situatie, het onvermogen tot een diepere communicatie , problematiek van het drugsgebruik : het komt wel voor in het verhaal maar niet uitgewerkt. Karakters worden ook niet uitgewerkt. De auteur heeft kansen laten liggen.
Schrijfstijl: nonchalant en langdradig. Erg storend bij het lezen is het steeds vermelden van “Zegt hij”, waarop “zij antwoordt”. Dit is erg zwak en niet literair.
Ik heb het boek in 1 lange avond uitgelezen omdat ik moe en toch begonnen was. Gemakkelijke tekst.
Conclusie :Voor mij is het een gewoon, niet ophef makend jeugdboek en ik begrijp zeker niet de positieve recensies in de media!
