Early Immigration in the United States provides a general overview of immigration to America in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The book describes why many people chose to leave their native countries, and why America was seen as a place of hope and prosperity. The book talks about different immigrant groups, including the British, Irish, Scandinavian, Italian, Chinese, and Africans. It describes many of the challenges that these immigrants faced when they came to the United States. This book could be used as an introduction to a social studies unit on immigration, or as homework reading during an immigration unit. The book includes both illustrations as well as original photographs that help the reader to visualize what these people looked like, as well as the time period that they lived in. Overall, Early Immigration is a great overview of immigration in that it discusses many different immigrant groups, their reasons for leaving their native countries, as well as the hardships that many immigrants faced upon their arrival to America.… (más)
