Ben Thompson's review in Churchman Autumn 2016 calls it "quite simply outstanding ... avoiding the danger of treating each psalm atomistically, and is enriched through attention to the wider context ... he identifies a melodic line to the Psalter -- "from suffering to glory" -- and shows how the overarching trajectory of the Psalms creates a Messianic expectation fulfilled in Jesus Christ". There is also "rich and warm application" into the Christian life.

The name of Matthew Henry will always be associated with his famous commentary. All over the world there are Christians who still appreciate the value of his work. For three hundred years his exposition of the biblical text, devotional comments, practical wisdom, warm theology and helpful insights have been of immense value to Christians both in their private devotions and family worship. Preachers and teachers of God s Word have also found his work a useful tool in the preparation of their sermons and Scripture lessons. Matthew Henry died aged 51, greatly respected during his life for his preaching, wise counsel and published works. Since then his catechism and advice on prayer, as well as his popular commentary, have been a source of spiritual nourishment to many.,You've seen or heard of his Commentary - now read the book of the man. ‘The period between the Great Ejection of 1662 and the evangelical revival which broke out in the late 1730s is too little known and understood by evangelical Christians today. Geoffrey Grogan recommends this book for several reasons. 'First of all, it is a book of good scholarship lightly carried, written in a beautifully clear and simple style. He almost always avoids technical terms and explains them well when their use seems unavoidable.
Then the author makes clear what a practical manual Leviticus was for its Old Testament readers, covering many aspects of everyday life in Israel. He shows us that the legislation was not simply strict but also deeply compassionate.
He never allows us to forget, however, that Leviticus is part of our Christian Bible and so has importance for us too. He often starts a chapter with an illustration from modern life - showing that there are abiding principles here and that Leviticus is not as remote as we may think from our life today.
He deals helpfully with difficult passages, often indicating how they gain illumination from other parts of Scripture. But above all he warms our hearts by showing how Leviticus finds its fulfilment in Christ, and makes us face its manifold challenges to personal holiness today.'
