Before reading this book I thought of salt as a tasty substance, yet I was under the mistaken impression that it should be avoided, if at all possible, because of water retention that shows up when you go on the scale, and because it is unhealthy. The book starts out dispelling this notion, by pointing out that table salt has been stripped and chemically altered, to the point that it is not very healthy—but in the unrefined mineral, which consists of sodium and chloride, there are over eighty natural occurring trace minerals that are healthy for the body. More than healthy: in its unrefined form, such as sea salt, it is necessary for human diet.

The author explains how salt is made, gathered, or mined, so if you are into making your own salt, starting out from a gallon of seawater, the process as explained here is quite simple. The various types of salt are listed and described: coarse salt, finishing salt, flake salt, flavored salt, flour del Sel, French sea salt, grey salt, grinder salt, Hawaiian sea salt, Himalayan salt, and many more.

Most importantly, the book explains the benefits of consuming salt, such as boosting your immune system, aiding in weight loss as well as skin conditions, controlling Diabetes, fighting depression and many more. And to bring the point home, the author goes even further, to dispel common myth, such as ‘salt is bad for you, ‘it causes high blood pressure’ and others. He explains, from a historical perspective, why salt was deemed to be a precious substance, and discusses various other uses of salt. Little tips finish off the book, such as using salt to keep flowers fresh.

Five stars.
