- Biografía breve
- [excerpted from The Press Democrat online obituary]
Elias probably was best known outside of Lake County for the self-help legal manuals he produced for 30 years for Nolo.com. Formerly known as Nolo Press, the Berkeley publishing firm produces do-it-yourself legal books and software that reduce the need for people to hire lawyers for simple legal matters. He was instrumental in launching Nolo's WillMaker, a popular do-it-yourself computer program for wills. He and his wife, Catherine Elias Jermany, also ran an online business that helped guide people through the bankruptcy process. His work has been featured in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and Newsweek.
Within Lake County, he also was known as a community radio show host, advocate for the poor, political commentator and a man who was generous to the detriment of his own bank account. Elias and Jermany also offered classes throughout California to teach people how to provide low-cost legal assistance without becoming lawyers.
