This is the "wallpaper city guide to Madrid. And Wallpaper, if I understand correctly is pretty much focused on modern Architecture and design. this little book is no exception. It's more or less a guide to the super trendy new bars and locales in Madrid. Many years ago I lived for 4 years in Madrid and thoroughly enjoyed my time there Alas, I strongly suspect that the Madrid that I remember is probably no more. some of the old things will remain. Some will have been overhauled but much will be new. I did re-visit Madrid about 1992 and the greatest impression I had was that the young people had changed. They were noisier, more obvious, more casually dressed, more assertive, more confident. It was an odd thing to notice but it was the thing that intruded on my consciousness more than the other changes in buildings and infrastructure.
There are some things in this book that bring back memories....such as the sculpture by Chillida under an expressway. At least I think I recall it. But most of the buildings featured are new or overhauled. And that's no bad thing. It makes me want to visit Madrid again and explore at leisure. But it will probably be without this little volume. I give it three stars.

This isn't really an alternative to the mainstream guides - more of a supplement. Being published by Phaidon, it may not be surprising that the book has a design theme. Whether it be architecture, shopping or restaurants, this book will provide you with the low-down on the coolest, hippest and least known (to visitors) of Brussels' outstanding designs and designers. Worth the (cheap) price just for the photographs.
