Andy Dougan

This one's a Christmas gift I read before giving it to my Uncle Nat. Its the story of the Ukrainian footballers (soccer players) from the Kyiv Dynamo team that played a German military team during the Nazi occupation of Kyiv, and then were thrown in a concentration camp for beating the Germans.

The book gives a lot of background information on WWII in Ukraine (or "the Great Patriotic War" as the Soviets called it) and was a quick read--I think that the author is usually a sports writer for a Glasgow, Scotland newspaper.

Overall, I enjoyed it, and thought it would make a great gift for my sports-loving, history/politics nut uncle.… (más)

Andy Dougan har genom studier av olika källor hittat och skrivit om en aspekt under den tyska ockupationen av Kiev, nämligen fotbollens liv i allmänhet och Dynamo Kiev i synnerhet.

Och han gör det på ett mycket läsvärt och intressant sätt. Nånstans såg jag att även den som inte är fotbollsintresserad kan få ut mycket av boken. Jag vill revidera det, jag tror nämligen att om man inte har minsta intresse av fotboll skulle de inslag (som naturligtvis inte är få) som handlar om just den sporten bli tämligen långtråkiga. Man har man - som jag - ett intresse av BÅDE fotboll OCH historia blir denna skildring högintresant.
Det känns som Dougan är påläst, och flera aspekter av ockupationsliv som jag aldrig tänkt på belystes med hög precision.
