- Biografía breve
- Marion Gräfin [Countess] Dönhoff was born at the family estate of Schloss Friedrichstein in East Prussia to an ancient aristocratic German family. Her parents were August Count Dönhoff, a soldier, diplomat and elected member of the German Reichstag, and Maria Countess von Lepel Dönhoff. Marion was educated in Berlin and studied economics at the University of Frankfurt. After the Nazi regime seized power in Germany in 1933, she moved to Basel, Switzerland, to complete her degree in an intellectually free environment. She earned a doctorate in economics with a disseration on large-scale land ownership in East Prussia. She returned to her family home in 1938, and joined the resistance movement. By 1943, she was acquainted with all of the major conspirators against Hitler, including Claus von Stauffenberg. After the failed assassination attempt on Hitler of July 20, 1944, many of her fellow resistance activists were executed. Dönhoff was arrested and interrogated by the Gestapo but released for lack of evidence. In January 1945, as Soviet troops pushed into East Prussia, she fled westward, traveling seven weeks alone on horseback before reaching Hamburg. She recounted her grueling journey in a 1962 book, Namen die keiner mehr nennt (Names No One Mentions Anymore). The castle in which she grew up was destroyed by the Red Army. In 1946, Dönhoff joined the new Hamburg-based weekly Die Zeit as political editor. She played a key role in making it West Germany's most influential liberal newspaper. She was promoted to editor-in-chief in 1968, and publisher in 1972.
She was the author of more than 20 books, including political and historical analyses of Germany as well as commentary on U.S. foreign policy. These included
Foe into Friend: The Makers of the New Germany from Konrad Adenauer to Helmut Schmidt (1982). Also among them was Kindheit in Ostpreussen (Before the Storm, 1988) a childhood memoir. In 1990, she was elected a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
