This is the type of Book New York publishers for some reason love. Relationship books that are boring Pointless and don’t go anywhere. Gene’s wife past away, Gene is struggling with how to deal with his grief. He loved his wife but did he ever tell her or act like he loved her? Same goes for Gene’s daughter Dary, who he doesn’t understand, the only bond exists I think because of the granddaughter. Gene is friends- college with Ed and Gayle, the two families did everything together. Gene doesn’t know why they are still friends. I could go on but who cares?
Not one character in this book is interesting. And the story is definitely not interesting. So of course critics loved it.
The author is from California and lives in California but chose to write a book about much older people than she is, who live in New Hampshire. I don’t get it.
Also can we please stop sending people to The Iowa Writers Workshop? Just because you went there doesn’t mean you can now write a book that is worth reading.… (más)

Someone at Moe’s in Berkeley suggested this book by an East Bay author, and I thankfully went for it. Minutes ago, I finished the last page of this most impressive book, and now I’m reveling in how well-crafted it was. Katharine Dion’s writing doesn’t do too much, she allows her characters to be themselves, but at the same time, they aren’t certain about what their realities, what their lives are all about. People come to places in their lives where what seemed so clear, sure, secure, and comforting for so long, is suddenly thrown into the chaotic winds of change. They then find themselves seeking a new definition for the different reality that presents itself. Grieving the loss of a longtime spouse is one of those moments.
The old saws about time healing all, working your way through grief—I find from personal experience—are way off the mark. It takes a lot of effort, and someone doesn’t work through grief, a survivor becomes a different person, learning to cope with a new reality, as things are different.
The Dependents has a main character, Gene, who has lost his wife of many years, as Maida has suddenly died and left him alone in their home. There’s a scene where Gene is seriously struggling with writing her eulogy, and he distracts himself by making a paper airplane and tossing it out the second-story window of the family home—right before freeing an entire pile of blank papers out the same window. His visiting daughter, Dary (with whom he has a troubled, confused, and fascinating relationship with), appears below the window gathering up the scattered papers and obviously not any happier with the fact that they’re all blank.
Gene isn’t just morning the loss of the most important person in his life, he is starting to have so many doubts about the life he’s lead, and his relationships with Maida, Dary, and the family’s closest friends, Ed and Gayle Donnelly. Grief sends his mind staggering through the significant and quiet moments of their lives together. Did Maida really love him? Did his best friend Ed even like him? Was Gayle attracted to him? Were Ed and Maida involved with each other? Did Dary understand love, and what’s this whole child-without-a-mate thing all about? Has he ever really understood women at all?
Then, Gene has some health problems, and he escapes to the summer cottage-on-a-lake that the two families always summered at, but he does it in the midst of a snowstorm, ending up snowed in. Nobody else dies, and some things become clearer. However, because our author has talent and class, she doesn’t wrap everything up in a neat little package with all things explained, settled, with a pretty bow on it. She reminds us that life is messy and everything is never truly clear.
We know people we love, but really only so deep, as none of us know everything about even ourselves. The things that we don’t like about ourselves and others, character flaws and shortcomings that we choose to ignore, differing memories, the vast varieties of ways we see and approach life, and so many other things, all make everyone’s reality different.
On a personal note, I feel that love is what it’s all about … and love is a matter of faith and believing in people.
Dion has written such a fine, sensitive, and insightful book about women, even though the main character is an endearing old man in grief. Speaking for myself, this old-man-in-grief will be sure to keep an eye out for her next book, because damn she can write.… (más)

Maida ist gestorben. Fast fünf Jahrzehnte haben sie und Gene Ashe gemeinsam verbracht, die Tochter erzogen und mit den Freunden Ed und Gayle Freud und Leid geteilt. Jetzt steht Gene alleine da, vor einer völlig ungewohnten, neuen Situation. Es ist als wenn wirklich ein Teil von ihm fehlen würde, so sehr waren sie zusammengewachsen, eingespielt aufeinander, haben sie sich auch ohne große Worte verstanden. Doch was soll er nun hier auf Erden ohne Maida? Sein Umfeld ahnt, dass das Alleinsein eine Herausforderung wird und kümmert sich um Gene – mehr jedoch als ihm lieb ist, denn eigentlich genieß er es, seinen Erinnerungen an die gemeinsame Zeit nachzuhängen.

Katharine Dions Debütroman verspricht eine schmerzliche Introspektion nach dem unerwarteten Verlust des geliebten Partners zu werden. Wie kann man ein Leben weiterführen nach so vielen Jahren Zweisamkeit, wie mit der neuen Einsamkeit umgehen? Wie reagieren Freunde und Familie auf die veränderte Lage, wenn aus einem Paar plötzlich wieder ein Individuum wird? Was ein psychologisch interessanter Einblick hätte werden können, verliert sich in Banalitäten und Belanglosigkeiten und lässt das, was der plötzliche Tod mit den Hinterbliebenen macht, völlig außer Acht. Leider eine große Chance vertan.

Der Roman beginnt mit den Vorbereitungen für die Trauerfeier. Man hätte erwartet, dass dies ein besonders emotionaler Moment für Gene, Maidas Ehemann, und für Dary, ihre gemeinsame Tochter ist. Doch erstaunlicherweise bleiben sie ebenso wie alle anderen Figuren seltsam emotionslos, geradezu abgestumpft, wo sie doch einen geliebten Menschen, der ihr Leben bis dato maßgeblich bestimmte, verabschieden. Für mich löst sich diese Diskrepanz nicht auf, sie wirkt umso verstörender als dass all die Erinnerungen an Maida geweckt werden und ihre großartige Art und Menschenzugewandtheit betont wird. Dies ist für mich letztlich auch der größte Kritikpunkt. Ja, man könnte vermuten, dass Gene in einer Art Schockstarre ist, diese überwindet er aber recht schnell mit seiner Haushälterin. Für mich bleibt offen, ob die Autorin die Figuren derart abgestumpft skizzieren wollte oder ob einfach bei mir nichts angekommen ist.

Durch die Rückblicke entsteht ein Bild von Maida, das jedoch keinerlei Überraschungen bietet. Eine nette, höfliche Frau. Es gab keine wirklichen Ausreißer, keine gut gehüteten Geheimnisse werden gelüftet. Und genauso wie das Portrait der Verstorbenen eine gewisse Durchschnittlichkeit und Mittelmäßigkeit beschreibt, bleibt für mich der ganze Roman irgendwie belang- und bedeutungslos. Nett erzählt zwar, aber ohne mich zu berühren, ohne aufzurütteln, ohne zum Denken anzuregen. Leider eine Geschichte, die sobald man das Buch am Ende zugeschlagen hat schon beginnt im Vergessen zu versinken.… (más)
