- Mary Angela Dickens was the oldest granddaughter of Charles Dickens, the famous novelist, and a niece of the noted barrister and judge Sir Henry Fielding Dickens. With the death of her paternal grandfather, her father Charles inherited the All Year Round periodical, and Mary published some of her earliest work in this publication. She produced several sentimental and melodramatic novels during the decade of the 1890s including Cross Currents (1891), A Mere Cypher (1893), A Valiant Ignorance (1894), Prisoners of Silence (1895), Against the Tide (1897), and On the Edge of a Precipice (1899). In later years, her work became less popular, and she ended her writing career by the age of 40.
