206. Official Proceedings of the Democratic National Convention Held in Chicago, Ill., July 7th,8th,9th,10th, and 11th, 1896, Reported by Edward B. Dickinson (read 26 Aug 1945) When I found out the Iowa Traveling Library had books giving the actual proceedings of national conventions, this volume on the 1896 Democratic Convention was the first one I asked for. When I received it on Aug 22, 1945, I said: "The reports of the 1896 and 1912 Democratic conventions came today!!!!! They really are interesting. I intend to read them verbatim. I wish I were better informed concerning political figures of that time." On Aug 24: "Reading merrily along on the 1896 convention. Certainly interesting." On Aug 25 I wrote: "Well, I read in the 1896 convention report of the balloting. Bryan won on the fifth ballot. Sewall on the 4th, I believe. Certainly most interesting. It comes close to being as good as hearing the convention via radio, although of course the individuality of the speaker is absent because you can't hear his voice." On Aug 26: "I finished reading 1896 convention report today and recorded the vote by ballot for each candidate for myself."… (más)
