Twelve children from around the world describe how water appears in their environment, and what it means to them. Their differing experiences are united by the phrase "water is life," translated into each of their languages.

I won Water's Children in a Goodreads Giveaway, thank you. This book is beautifully illustrated and makes you think of the way that water is regarded from the different countries throughout the world. I like the watermarks that say "water is life" in the different languages. I am going to pass mine on to an 8 year old whom I know around Earth Day for her to share with her class and make her a t-shirt to go with it. I'm so glad I got to enjoy this book.

Summary: Marwa and Ahmad live in a country of war in the Middle East. They both love playing soccer. One day when they are playing, they find a small yellow bottle that has been dropped from an airplane. It explodes and injures the two boys and they can never play soccer the same again.

Personal reflection: Even though this story is very sad, I think it introduces a necessary rawness when it comes to War and the effects that children must face in their every day lives.

Class use: Text set on effects of war on children and open discussion for times of conflict and war and the ways that children cope with war. How do students use hobbies to help with conflicts in their lives?… (más)
