Samuel R. Delany Jr. was born in Harlem, New York on April 1, 1942. He is a science fiction and short story writer. His first novel, The Jewels of Aptor, was published in 1962. He has written more than 20 novels and collections of short stories, memoirs, and critical essays. He has received mostrar más numerous awards including the Nebula Award for best novel for Babel-17 in 1966 and The Einstein Intersection in 1967, the Nebula Award for best short story for Aye, and Gomorrah and Time Considered as a Helix of Semi-Precious Stones, the Hugo Award for best short story for Time Considered as a Helix of Semi-Precious Stones in 1970 and for his non-fiction book, The Motion of Light in Water, and the Bill Whitehead Award for Lifetime Achievement in Gay Literature in 1993. Sexo, violencia, arte, cultura, búsqueda de una identidad..., todo ello dentro de los fluctuantes límites de una ciudad irreal llamada Bellona, sumergida en un mundo que sigue indiferentemente su camino y completamente aislada de él. Una galería de pesonajes y situaciones apasionantes: desde el misticismo del monasterio hasta la promiscuidad del nido de los escorpiones, desde la cruda realidad de una terapia psiquiátrica hasta la onírica irrealidad de una orgía tribal en torno al fuego, la búsqueda de una (¿inexistente?) verdad se convierte en un periplo reflejado paso a paso en un diario alucinante. ¿Dónde termina la fantasía y empieza la realidad? ¿Dónde termina la realidad y empieza la fantasía? En la Tierra ya no hay seres humanos y una banda de extraterrestres ha tomado la forma corporal de la gente desaparecida; intentado dar sentido a los artefactos humanos entre los que viven, tratan también de resucitar las tradiciones humanas. Aparecen avatares de Ringo Starr, Billy the Kid y Jesucristo junto con la figura del héroe, un músico negro que toca melodías en un machete y que es Orfeo y Teseo.
Una de las primeras expediciones interestelares sufre un accidente cuyas causas se ignoran. La nave Beta-2 queda confinada en un lejano rincón de la galaxia, junto con la colonia humana que transportaba. Siglos después, Beta-2 y su Pueblo Estelar son ya leyenda. Los viejos lobos del espacio le cantan en Puertotierra, bajo los neones de las tabernas. Los profesores recogen los fragmentos de la antigua epopeya. Y los estudiantes se inclinan sobre ella para desentrañar la verdad de lo ocurrido.
