It took me a while to finish this book. It's not because this story is bad in any way, but more because I'm so busy with my own personal life. I feel glad I managed a chance to finally finish it.

We meet Dean who recently graduated from Paramedic school in a wealthy small city called Elk City. Dean believes that because he graduated top in the class that he will be able to go to the downtown post to treat gunshot victims. Little did he know that his school assigned him against his will to a secret division of the city's forces that specializes in treating... a different kind of populace.

Distraught with the prospect of being more like a courier service than medic, Dean soon realizes the huge challenges of this unique patient population is more exciting than his dream post and starts to fall in love with his new job and befriend his coworkers. He even starts to feel a soft spot for some of the regular patients such as a silly middle-aged vampire named Gibbie.

However threats are across the corner. Some patients are being attacked by angry mobs and Dean suspects the vampiric boyfriend of her coworker Bryenne named James has something to do with it. However there is also the issue that Bryenne used to have a former coworker named Zach that quit the job a few months ago and nobody knows what happened to him.

Is there a conspiracy going on? Or is Dean just imagining things?

Well written with a good dose between medical action and character interaction, the author knows medicine dosages and procedures very well. I do chuckle that the author makes intubation so easy. Maybe it's because I've never used a fibroscope before but I find intubation via the old fashioned laringoscope and direct visualization to be really difficult. I'm envious that these ambulances have so many fancy smancy gadgets and techy stuff. In the country where I live, ambulances are pretty much just large vehicles with rusted down stretchers filled with holes and nothing else.

The story ends with a mystery that is starting to unveil enticing the reader to continue with the series. I'm interested in reading the rest of the books sometime when I have the chance.

I have left this ARC waiting for ages and even though I really enjoyed book #1, it took me ages to read this prequel. Chapter 1 starts in a really high note. Vampire Lord James Lee and his second-in-command werewolf Rudy are hit by a drunk driver. James only suffered menial scrapes that heal instantly, but his friend has a life threatening arm injury that will require human medical attention to save his life. Worried humans would freak out if they discovered Rudy was a werewolf that could shift into his other form instantly, he calls a special ambulance unit that specializes in rather… Unusual patients and would not freak out.
After seeing how paramedic Brynne treats his close friend with so much professionalism, he soon realizes he both feels attracted to her and intrigued. After Brynne rejects a fancy sports car James wanted to gift her as a reward for her efforts, Rudy suggests he should find other more modern ways to get her to like him. He then starts putting a lot of money into the Unusual ambulance program and invites Brynne on a few casual dates as both a way to teach her more about the Unusual community living in Elk City and to get to know him on a more personal note so that she can see he isn’t as old fashioned and monstrous as she initially assumed. He only drinks blood from willing volunteers without risking their lives in exchange for a large sum of money, rues the Unusuals with justice and always treats Brynne with politeness.
I really enjoyed the prequel because I oved James’s character in book #1 after he has been dating Brynne for a couple of years and how Dean Flynn treats him poorly without giving him a chance to shine. I think he is my favorite character of the series and had a lot of fun reading this prequel.

The second iteration of the Extreme Paramedic Service series continues where Dean juggles between a group of nut cases off to harm the Unusual community he treats, his pervasive feelings of disgust regarding coworker Brynne’s boyfriend James just because he is a vampire who occasionally drink her blood, and a supernatural love interest of his own with an angel or Eldara named Ashley who becomes attracted to him because he was an open minded healer whose decisions could stall good or bad for the city.
Our favorite sidekick characters from book one return. Freddy the zombie continues cooking meals that hopefully don’t have severed fingers for the paramedics and the always hyperactive vampire Gibbie buys a creepy stalkerish white van and tries to pretend to be a paramedic which causes a couple awkward situations.
The book also has a few antagonists who are trying to lure Dean into their cause. It will be up to him to decide which side he is on. While I do feel like the ending was very… anticlimactic (I sincerely suggest buying the 3 book boxset like I did and consider all 3 books to be sort of meshed into 1 big story instead of three parts), I continue to really enjoy how the book goes from here.
