This was okay but I feel like the author wasn't sure what age group they were aiming for as an audience. There were a lot of topics handled through the narration of an 11 year old that most kids that age wouldn't have the background knowledge to properly understand and most adults wouldn't enjoy learning about through a child.

This is a beautiful story of a little girl, without a mother, who lives with one grandmother and her other grandmother lives in the house next door. Her grandmothers do not speak to one another, but she loves them equally. The story evolves and made me believe that love can conquer all.

Eleven year old Allegra lives with her grandmother Matilde, next door to her grandmother Joy; her father lives in the flat above Matilde’s garage. Allegra knows her grandmothers love her, but they are very different and don’t get along with each other.

“[...] but it’s too much being put into just one person, and the way they love me… well, it kind of pumps into me in a weird way. Sometimes I wish they could just love me less and take what's left over and put it into liking each other a little bit more.”

I thought the initial mystery and conflict were slightly stronger than the answers and aftermath. But this is an interesting portrayal of growing up in Sydney in the 70s, and of the women’s liberation movement, and of a family dealing with grief. I read it in practically one sitting.
