Fairly typical Regency romance. I enjoyed the strength of the female lead, but the unrelieved cruelty of the male lead got rather old. The initial sex scenes were brutal, almost. To me, it seemed unlikely that he would make such a sudden reversal into loving his wife.

Wonderful. It's clumsy in (a few) spots - illogical reactions, unlikely gestures, tell rather than show - it may be one of her early books. And with all that, it was magnificent. Jason and Diana are solid, well-described people, with logical motivations and reactions (mostly), with a great story connecting them. I was crying all through the last couple chapters. The skating complex and its aims makes a good story by itself, though the romance is the main focus (of course). I'll be rereading this, and I want the rest of the series - I didn't know she'd written these (actually, I have a couple, but I didn't know they were part of a series).
Huh. I had the author confused with another one - who also writes magnificent Kismet romances. Now I have a new author to collect...

I've owned this book for years, and rate it as one of my favorite romance novels. After the death of her beloved mother, Byrony Balmaine has no choice but to live with the uncle she has never met. Eager to protect her (and to redeem the neighbor his late wife loved as a son), he arranges to marry Byrony to Deveril St. John, the Devil Duke. The union of these two reluctant partners is tumultuous at best, and drives both to actions they later regret. Their attempts to manage the passion that flares between them are complicated by an old friend who falls in love with Byrony and the machinations of St. John's black-hearted mother. In the end of course, true love wins out, but the journey to this foregone conclusion is wild and wonderful enough to make this book a keeper.… (más)
