Biografía breve
Elizabeth Daly was a lifelong fan of detective fiction and especially of the works of Wilkie Collins. At the age of 62, after several fruitless attempts, she succeeded in publishing her first novel, Unexpected Night. She wrote 15 more Henry Gamadge novels and became one of the grandes dames of American mystery fiction. She received a special Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America in 1961 for her body of work.

I liked it, although the puzzle plot was complicated for me because of a large number of characters. I found it difficult to keep track of everyone. I liked the "down home" style of the dialogue, which fit the setting. I found that the story-telling was long-winded, which may reflect the time it was written. An OK read.

This is the New York I had always wished I'd lived in: A land of erudite bibliophiles and old families, where even the skeletons in the family closet spoke in complete sentences. The mystery itself is pure Grand Guignol, but the solution is everything a Golden Age mystery should be. Small wonder Daly was Christie's favorite American writer.

I never suspected the true solution to this second book in the Henry Gamage series!
