This is an enjoyable guide to how people really lived in Medieval Europe. It debunks a lot of the mistaken ideas we have about life then. What makes it so readable is the way the book is structured. The book is divided into numerous small sections that try to answer some basic questions ranging from "Did medieval people wear underwear?" to "Wasn't the church always burning people for heresy?"

The positive aspect of the book is that the author provides short answers to each of these questions. The negative aspect of the book is that the short answers provided often do not explain how things changed during the hundreds of years of the Middle Ages. Also, the answers are focused mostly on the behaviors of aristocrats and the clergy instead of explaining the differences experienced by the poor.

In summary, the book wets your taste to learn more and provides a nice bibliography where interested readers can find more on each subject.

I once told a friend that I wanted to write a 'Rule of Benedict' for humanists like myself who find inspiration in the Western Christian monastic life but can't believe in the supernatural and don't want to give up sex. Until I compose that rule, this will suffice. I don't think it's comprehensive, but I enjoyed it for what it is.

Absolutely wonderful illustrations by Anna Lobanova and design by Misha Beletsky.
