The book is basically an argumentation against what it defines as "cultural pessimism". Unfortunately it goes no further than common sense.

Great interpretation of (not only) american economic situation. The subtitle says everything: "How America Ate All the Low-hanging Fruit of Modern History, Got Sick, and Will (eventually) Feel Better".

Economists are an odd sort. Though I can understand a lot of their thinking, it's like they're the type of person that make their decisions comparing the lists of pro and cons. The author at least pays heed to this fact and laughs about it.

The chapter on sins excited me most. Are there really companies who you could pay to use for an alibi? Yes. Are there companies that you could pa yto be your girlfriend? Yes.

But I guess he lost me with the chapter on food. I consider myself an expert on eating since I do it many times a day - we all are!

He doe offer some suggestions to improve on meetings. Even passing some value to even the must mundane and pointless of meetings. His problems of dealing with habitual late people (one of my pet peeves) made me laugh but even an economist can't find a solution for that one!

Very quick read, which offers several reasons why high economic growth in the U.S. has limits, and an economic cooling off period is to be expected. I liked the fact that, unlike many Republicans who will say a decline in U.S. GNP is the fault of the Democrats / Obama, or unlike many Democrats who will say the same about the Republican / Bush policies, Cowen takes the politics out of it, and just offers reasons which are for the most part, attributable to a number of causes outside the spectrum of politics.… (más)
