A little bit environmental science, a little bit animal biology, a little bit how you can make a difference, and a little bit finding your place in a new school. And a lot of sea turtle babies.
I received a free copy of this book through a drawing at Goodreads. I was eager to check it out. I had been hearing quite a bit about this book. I was not disappointed.
It was a fun, quick read and I have no doubt that any child who loves animals will really like this book. It has an A-Team feel (and adults will catch some other references to pop culture movies hidden within). There were great facts sprinkled throughout without being burdensome to the plot. Nuk, Wan, Murdock and Ariel are back. I might have liked this one better than the first. We stay diving into a little more of the personal stories of some of our heroes. And I liked the new animal additions. The sloth was great, and I liked the somewhat subtle hints at the problems that albatrosses face with waste. Another one that I get to hand off to my daughter to read now!
I get questions all the time about environmental activism and service learning and helping kids feel empowered to take action -- there are a lot of good higher level books on the subject, but this is the first excellent picture book I've seen that hits all of those points. And an excellent picture book is exactly what teachers are looking for -- concise, engaging and with a blueprint for success.
