This Open University book was used as part of the course material for the AA316 course on the nineteenth century novel. In fact, it is the first part of the course, taking on the first half of the nineteenth century, with very good explanations of the evolution of the form of the novel, the overwhelming changes in technological advances at the time, the chronology of early literary criticism and the deep transformation of the English society, as a result of such changes. This course is one of the best of the whole literature curriculum, and anyone interested in the nineteenth century novel would do well to have the set. This is also very good for undergraduate students who need in-depth information or to freshen up some notions of realism and the debates surrounding the evolution of the genre.
