Unusual for Cicerone I found this guide a bit minimalistic particularly in areas where detail would have overcome a lack of obvious direction on the ground. Which makes all the additional information about other routes along the PW a bit infuriating.

I used this guide recently to walk this route from the Pennines to the north sea at Middlesborough. It's good in that no supplementary maps are necessary though they may be thought a useful addition for doing the trek at a more leisurely pace than my own time of two and a half days. My only complaint is that I found the 'alternative direction options' rather confusing. They are placed in a dedicated tinted panel but even so I ocassionally found difficulty in separating them from the main text. I always think it difficult to review walking guides as so much depends on the skill of the reader, his or her interpretative abilities and the ease with which an 'ear' is developed for the author's route instructions. A proper review requires an assessment of reader and publication. And as it got me to the end of the trek with no real problems (blisters apart) it is undoubtably 'fit for purpose'.… (más)
