Blind Dog Canyon by Brett Cogburn
A Widowmaker Jones Western #5

I don’t usually come into a series on book five and did not see in the book description that this was not a standalone story but part of a series. That said, I had no trouble following the story. I am curious about what Newt did in the previous books and when he met Mr. Smith but otherwise was fully invested in the story and how it would turn out.

What I liked:
* Newt: survivor, pugilist in the past, has his own set of ethics, good friend, generous, cares for the weak, does what is required, a survivor, scarred, steady, an interesting man
* Mr. Smith: Mohave Indian, travels with Newt, has seen the world, educated, wears a suit, tattooed, wise, older, multilingual, quiet, believes in clan and family
* Zuri: young, daughter of shepherd killed early in the book, survives the wilderness and evil men and bitter cold, goes on a quest at the end of the book, curious about how her life will unfold
* Rufus: Happy Jack’s rescue dog, old, has cataracts, might be deaf, really wondered if he made it through the winter
* The plot, pacing, setting, and writing
* That I was invested in the characters and hoped the ones I cared about would make it to the end alive
* That the bad guys were exposed and that most were handily dealt with
* Thinking about good vs evil and the shades of gray in between – men are men and not always easy to classify as one or the other

What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
* Thinking about how difficult life must have been in the time period of this story and how much effort must have been needed to survive

Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more by this author? Yes

Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington-Pinnacle for the ARC – This is my honest review.

This is a truly great read. I love good Westerns, but I find most to be formulaic and repetitive. This is not one of those type of Westerns!! A tale of two friends and the different paths they take as they struggle to adjust to the waning days of the free-range west.

Red Ruckus by Brett Cogburn
Morgan Clyde 3

Gun battles, horse stealing, lynching, corrupt marshals, and a man with skills called in to clean things up – or die trying. Morgan Clyde is a man who gets the job done while doing what he believes to be right…no matter what.

What I liked;
* Morgan: war veteran, sure-shot, divorced, has been a lawman and worked for the railroad, a legend or if not – one in the making
* Dixie: war veteran, ex-lawman, farmer, friend of Morgan’s, might have a sweet spot for Molly
* Molly: immigrated from Ireland, has a checkered past in regard to work, strong, has a business, might have a sweet spot for Dixie though she used to have one for Morgan
* Cumsey: horse thief, sweet talker, prankster, likable, seems to land in trouble, would like to find out how he turns out
* Noodles: Sicilian barber who works for and with Molly in her establishment – would like to see him with his family if the series continues
* Seeing some of the characters from previous books
* Getting to know more about Morgan and his past
* Wondering if Morgan will reconnect with his son in the future
* Thinking about Morgan and hoping he finds a way to be at peace with himself and move toward a better future
* Hoping Molly and Dixie will have happy lives – together or apart
* The potential for more books in the series and wondering what will happen next
* That the task Morgan was set at the beginning of the story was achieved – no loose ends

What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
* Knowing that there are still people doing evil now just as they were in this story
* Morgan’s ex-wife and the trouble she creates

Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read another book in this series? Yes

Call Me Lonesome by Brett Cogburn
Morgan Clyde #2

Morgan Clyde gave up his star to play cat and mouse with a killer…who is prey and who predator AND who will win in the end?

What I liked:
* The gritty real feel of the story
* Morgan Clyde: intriguing man that I want to know better, lethal, quick, intelligent, capable, and a whole lot more.
* Dixie Rayburn: chief of railroad police after Clyde resigned, survivor, talkative, good man, hope to see more of him in the future
* Molly O’Flanagan: Irish immigrant, survivor, prostitute, addict, has dreams, wants revenge, difficult backstory, wonder what will happen to her as the story progresses
* Saul the cook and Hannah his fiancée: a couple that met years before and married for a short while in this story
* The Bickford family: blacksmith father, laundress mother, looking for a future in the west
* Sergeant Harjo and the Creek Lighthorse
* That the bad guys, and there were several, were eventually thwarted
* Wondering what will happen next in the series – Where will Morgan Clyde go next? Will he work for the railroad again? Will he return to Ironhead?

What I didn’t like:
* Exactly what and who I was meant not to
* Knowing that the evil in this book is all too real and likely to happen in the world…now and also back when this story took place

Note: The story had more than one thread that had me hopping from one to the other sometimes skipping ahead to find out what would happen. I never really warmed up to any of the characters but might over time.

Did I enjoy this book? For the most part
Would I read another book in this series? I believe so
