Cuando Robert W. Chambers escribió los relatos que conforman este libro, obra destacada de la literatura de terror del siglo XIX, no podía sospechar que su influencia traspasaría los límites de lo literario para permear otras disciplinas. No cabía imaginar que, más de cien años después de darles forma, cerca de 20 millones de seriéfilos se cuestionarían semanalmente la identidad del Rey de Amarillo. True Detective (la serie más seguida del canal HBO en 2014, y una de las mejores consideradas por la crítica en la última década) toma la oscuridad y la impenetrable atmósfera de los relatos del estadounidense y las desplaza a Luisiana, donde los agentes Rust Cohle y Martin Hart (interpretados por unos inspiradísimos Matthew McConaughey y Woody Harrelson) investigan una serie de asesinatos, tras los que se esconde un escurridizo Rey de Amarillo.
De los diez relatos que conformaron El Rey de Amarillo en su primera edición, datada en 1895, cuatro han alcanzado la categoría de clásicos. «La Máscara», «El Reparador de Reputaciones», «En el Patio del Dragón» y «El Signo Amarillo» permanecen en el tiempo como paradigmas del terror enigmático y fantasmagórico, un mundo tenebroso que influyó en H. P. Lovecraft y su Necronomicón. Los protagonistas de estos relatos han de hacer frente al horror, tentados por un libro —que en una suerte de maldición metaliteraria lleva por nombre El Rey de Amarillo— que arrastra a quienes lo leen a la irremediable tragedia. Como presagio del desastre, a lo largo de los cuatro relatos desfila ante el lector una compañía de seres fantasmales, insoportables para sus protagonistas, augurio de la locura que les acecha.… (más)
