I'll read this another time, but just didn't have time for it right now
Lovely, engaging short stories, some take place in China, some in the US. Some involve mixed Chinese and American families. A gentle sense of humor in many of the stories, others are a bit melancholy in a sweet way. I just picked this up randomly at my library’s new fiction shelf, a lucky find!
This short story collection is really interesting, and focuses on the Chinese American experience in a way that I haven't seen done before. There are several stories in this collection which have a woman or girl MC whose father is Chinese and mother is white, and it was refreshing to see issues that come from being mixed race in that way. I also really appreciated the variety in this collection: while most of the stories are contemporary character studies, a couple felt historical, one was definitely set in the future, and the narrators—though all related to the Chinese diaspora in some way—had definite variations among them, as well.… (más)
A bittersweet coming-of-age story about a Cambodian refugee family's struggles in America after all that they endured in the killing fields of their home country. Their "American" story is complex and complicated yet believable. Through Nea's practical, matter-of-fact eyes, we see their lives laid bare.
