Less Than a Shadow por David Chacko
Confusing book about a CIA operative called in to assist the Istanbul police investigation of the murder of a foreign journalist. Bulgarians, Turish mafia, Iranians, etc. Did not even care by the end.
This is just about as good as it gets when it comes to detective fiction. Tough language, memorable characters, constantly turning plot, and a surprise ending.
Added bonus, for me, is that it's set in the town in which I was born. Before the 60's, the small city of McKeesport was mildly well-known for a number of things, but none so much as its notorious brothel-district, Brick Alley. I recall the moment when Brick Alley finally succumbed to bourgeois pressure. The neighbourhood fell to an "Urban Renewal" project that, curiously, replaced it with warehouses and steel mills with little civic merit.
Glad to see the hellish history of a gritty steel town lives on, even if only in fiction.… (más)
