David Cataneo’s Tony C: The Triumph and Tragedy of Tony Conigliaro is a workmanlike biography of the Boston Red Sox slugger whose promising career was curtailed by a beanball one August night in 1967. While the handsome and hugely popular outfielder successfully resumed his career after more than a year’s absence, his vision had been irreparably damaged by that Jack Hamilton pitch that struck him flush in the temple, and his comeback consequently was short-lived. Cataneo foreshadows that fateful moment with numerous references to Conigliaro’s habit of crowding the plate, leaning perilously close to the strike zone. This is a heartbreaking story, but along the way it conjures some wistful thoughts of the career that might have been had Tony C somehow managed to evade that inside fastball.… (más)
