Enjoyable but information is withheld from the reader... I did like the way the storyline in London intertwined with the storyline in Austria.

I quite enjoyed this mystery with two storylines converging in the Austrian Alps just after New Year's. A fun wintry read with a really great sense of place! This is #8 in a series (and currently the only one in print), but works perfectly fine as a standalone. I would love to read more in this series, though, so here's hoping the British Library gets around to reprinting more of Carnac's work (they seem to favor her other pen name, E.C.R. Lorac, more).

However, this turns out to have its problems, including the facts that the owner has bypassed the usual bureaucracy when making the place habitable, and that the previous tenant may have been involved in a major art theft (his whereabouts are currently unknown). Finally a body is found in some nearby ground. Is it the ex-tenant? And where is the stolen artwork? This is an enjoyable read, with the young women Joe and Pen likeable characters who try to get on with their work despite all the setbacks. Chief Inspector Rivers works patiently at the case, together with his associate Henry Fearon, and the dramatic ending reveals some unexpected relationships between various members of the cast.… (más)
