When we meet Imogene Tubbs, she is a young teenager being raised by her maternal grandmother in rural Newfoundland. Her mother (Maggie) lives in Toronto and visits and calls occasionally. Imogene has never met her father, who was an older man who had a relationship with her mother when she was 14. After Maggie became pregnant, he disappeared. As Imogene enters high school, she becomes aware that many people believe she is actually the daughter of Cecil, the local drug dealer who is both feared and ridiculed. There is talk that Cecil raped Maggie and Imogene is the result. No wonder Maggie moved to Toronto!

This is a well written novel with excellent character development. It is a coming of age story about belonging, community and self-discovery. Imogene is a wonderful character who is at times insightful and who, at other times, you'd like shake some sense into.

I love the ending.....
