This book presents methods

For building muscular strength and an attractive masculine physique, for using strength and increasing skill and endurance in athletic performance or gymnastic competition, and for learning and applying the traditional methods of self-defense.

Inherent in developing strength and the ability to defend oneself is the building of confidence, the calm, quiet confidence of the person trained in the Oriental arts of self-defense-by means of which one reacts to attack but never provokes physical reaction.

The body-building programs are comprised of 'muscle tension' exercises, setting-up exercises, tumbling, gymnastics, and weight-lifting. The fundamental rolls, stands, springs, bends, flips are presented before the basic throws and releases of the Oriental systems of self-defense, among them judo, jiu jitsu, karate. The exercises and movements are illsutrated by photographs of athletes in actual work-outs.

If you are a person who wants to get into peak physical condition a muscle athlete who must keep in condition a practical person who wants to know how to maneuver in dangerous situations -this compact, illustrated book will guide you directly to your goal. The author, combining his wartime training and keen insight into the general physical limitations of modern living, has skillfully designed common-sense programs of calisthenics and weight-lifting to develop muscles. Moreover, he shows you how to fit them to your own needs. Some methods are unnoticeable 'muscle tensions'-used by celebrities from Teddy Roosevelt to Wyatt Earp-which can be performed anywhere without attracting attention. Some are setting-up exercises, 'fun' gymnastics. Others are the fundamental rolls, stands, springs, bends and flips of tumbling. Still others are the thows and releases basic to judo, jiu jitsu, karate, savate, ketsugo andother Oriental systems. Thoughout this building-up program, you will learn how to make your muscles work for you and how to take advantage of every action-from yelling at a football game or gripping a broomstick to weight-lifting with professional equipment or a discarded crankshaft of an old car. You'll find ourself unconsciously exercising even as you read!
