How big was their first brewing system? 10-gallons. I know this because it's related to the reader at least a half dozen times. There are a lot of repeated thoughts and stories in this book, interspersed with actually interesting notes on the history of Dogfish Head. Like their beer, like their mission, but I don't really like this book.

founder/president of Dogfish Head Craft Brewery tells the story of his business and, really, his life. I admire him and found the book interesting and well-written (he was an English major). more a story of people, funny anecdotes, and general business advice, than a technical manual. enjoyable, easy read.

Sam Calagione turns out to be a pretty good writer. Those expecting a lot of practical advice on starting up a small business or a brewery might want to turn elsewhere. Those looking for a text that addresses larger issues, contains amusing and personal stories about being involved in a startup/small businesses, and something that might make you feel hopeful but also aware of the amount of energy required will be happy.

Extreme Brewing is a beautiful book to look at, worth plopping down on the coffee table. The photo illustrated brewing process is great for beginners. This is not a book for folks who don't want to take the time to hunt around for the odd ingredient and then pay through the nose for it. The various side bars provide good tips and insights from master brewers. Perhaps the most interesting chapter for me was the chapter providing recipes for various extreme commercial brews; seeing how these beers are constructed provides ideas for creating your own, perhaps more effectively than the other extreme recipes.… (más)
