Caddo County (Texas) Sheriff Bo Handel may usually have enough drunks and petty criminals to deal with to keep busy, if laid back. But when the minister’s wife’s body is found in Reverend Twiller’s front yard, with three bullet holes in her back things escalate quickly. There are a plethora of suspects, including small-time criminals, bankers, lawyers, business owners, drug dealers (both Columbian and local), and at least one Mafia hit man.

I like Sheriff Bo Handel. I like his management style, his no-nonsense method of interrogating people, his relationship with his secretary, and his easy banter with other law enforcement types (i.e. FBI agents). Burton gives us a little of his back story, and hints of a romantic interest. I also like Burton’s way with words; one example - ”…a full head of heavily sprayed, ash-blond hair that swept up and backward so dramatically that it looked like the work of a moderately skilled taxidermist.

If this makes it sound like this is a cozy mystery, that’s my fault. It is definitely NOT a cozy. There are some gristly scenes and serious killing going on here. In fact, I thought the plot got away from Burton. There were so many suspects and so many twists in the plot that I lost track of who was wanted for what. And it seemed that the poor initial victim was just lost in the body count. Now, I’m not so naïve as to think that real-life murders are always wrapped up nice and easy, but while Bo Handel and the FBI may have been satisfied with how things turned out I wasn’t.

That being said, and despite the 2.5 star rating I WOULD read another of Burton’s novels.

If you came across a book writen by your favorite author without a cover, could you tell just by reading a few pages who the author was? It would be a given, just because you know that author so well you could spot their style even without seeing a name in print first.
This book is a collection of Texas Noir short stories. In classic Milton Burton style, delightful stories filled with cynical humor and a passion for honor unlike any other. The titles are A Good Beginning, Fine Tuning, Cherry Coke, Fangs, Grassy Knoll, Hobby, Old Ira’s Still, The Collector, Quick lube: A Fable, The Grays, The Watchers, Vessel unto Honor, Thrice Hanged Throckett, The Day of the Hornet, The Gipper in Purgatory, The Apprentice, and The Question.
I would like to take a minute of your time to honor a fallen hero and the author of these great stories. Some people, after you meet them, your life will be changed forever. This happened to me after meeting Milton. I am a wannabe writer who has been working on a series of stories about a detective pig. I joined a yahoo group that was run by a woman author who writes detective books for a living. When I posted my work there, I was ridiculed and treated very poorly by another member of the forum. Milton came to my rescue, and in Milton-fashion told the member to “Go have relations with himself!” Milton then contacted me privately and invited me to his yahoo group where I have found a home among his friends. He also told me that I had the potential to become a truly talented writer and begged me not to give up. I can honestly say if it were not for Milton, I would have stopped writing. Since writing my first story, I have written and completed five of the detective pig stories and am working on more.
I am deeply saddened to say that on December 2 2011 Milton left us. I just wish I could have told him how thankful I am, he gave me the kick in the pants I needed to rediscover a long lost passion I thought was lost forever. I wish you Gods speed my dear friend and please do not give the Big Guy upstairs to much guff as he is doing the best he can.

Last seen in the excellent Nights Of The Red Moon sheriff Bo Handel of Caddo County, Texas returns in These Mortal Remains. Beauregard “Bo” Handel has been sheriff more than thirty years and brooks no interference from the fools in Austin or Washington. He knows the people of his southeast Texas county and they know him. He also knows that sometimes people due amazingly stupid things. Things that can get them killed.

That is exactly what happened to a pair of idiots by the name of Topper Smith and Mean Dean Bean. When they tried to rob the Royal early one morning, Dual Driggers refused to get on the floor like everyone else because of his arthritis. Then he pulled out a 45. Colt automatic and the man who had been on the beach at Normandy on D-Day made quick work of them before going back to eating his breakfast. While their crime spree is over, their deaths will be the first two dominoes to fall in a far reaching and complicated case that will interest those at the local, state and national level in various branches of law enforcement. This is the kind of case that can make or break careers under the harsh spotlight of the national media and Sheriff Bo Handel does not care. This is his county, his people, and he is going to do the job he was elected to do his way.

These Mortal Remains is another excellent read from Texas author Milton T. Burton. Rich in details with numerous plots twists; this latest read showcases an author at the top of his form. When Milton wrote fiction it was with honesty and conviction that not only provided one heck of a story, it also told cultural truths of the time of the book as well as today. It is also sadly true that Milton Burton is an author who is no longer with us as explained in the preface written by Texas author George Wier.

I knew Milton Burton and was honored to have been his friend. Before he passed away far too soon, Milton would call me on a regular basis a couple of times a month from his home in Tyler, Texas. His gravelly voice would boom across the miles as he inquired as to my family and my fiction writing. Writing, history, and many other topics deeply interested Milton who never stopped teaching. I deeply miss those talks and the man I never got to sit with in person. I have a feeling that somewhere Milton is cackling with derision at the politicians and writing yet more great stories.

“Fresh Meat” by Leigh Neely for Criminal Element

Madeline Kimbell is a damsel in distress; Virgil Tucker is a lawman with a strong sense of justice and a network of friends on both sides of the law who can help to keep her safe. Milton T. Burton’s The Devil’s Odds has all the ingredients a good Southern noir should have: strong, dark men, strong, beautiful women, desperate secrets, nasty criminals, murder, gambling, Texas Rangers and the mob just before the end of World War II. It doesn’t get much better than this.

Like most women in peril, Madeline has seen something she shouldn’t have and now some very unpleasant people are chasing her. It was obvious from the beginning that she wasn’t telling Virgil the whole truth. Fortunately Virgil saw that too and knew he’d have to dig up her secrets himself.

I really like Virgil, who is tough as shoe leather and tenderhearted enough to adore his aunt. I especially liked the way he related to the old vaqueros who worked at the ranch. When it comes to the bad guys, he gives as good as he gets, always working to stay a step or two ahead of them. I cheered for him when he beat up Madeline’s ex and almost fainted when he was pursuing leads and got captured by the nasty sheriff and his two slimy henchmen.
