What a delight! I had to read pieces to my husband because I was laughing so hard. Jennings is a wonderful character! This is a boarding school story and a terrific one at that. The last chapter says it all. I'm reading this for my Vintage Book Circle group which have taken on the task of selecting books from a series to read and review. I'm considering similarities and differences in this and Just William! by Richmal Crompton. Jennings is a more likeable character. Just William seems to be trying to punch adult buttons. I'll be curious to know if others in my group would be interested in comparing the two.… (más)

Rex in actie por Anthony Buckeridge

Ik ben geen 13 meer, dat is duidelijk. Ooit vond ik dit een heel geestig boek, ik merkte bij herlezing dat ik veel passages en gebeurtenissen nog vrijwel uit het hoofd kende. Maar intussen zijn al die gebeurtenissen op Ebngelse scholen, sport en schooleer, met leraren met bijnamen (net als in Nederlandse jongensboeken uit die tijd) zo ontzettend flauw geworden, het ppb (puber pakt boef)-tyhema zo afgekloven (in dit boek overigens vrij origineel omgekeerd, de boef is geen boef). Het is leuk gedaan, het boek dat we lezen is het boek dat hoofdpersoon Rex schrijft als opstel, leuke wendingen, maar Voorbij Voorbij.… (más)

Jennings & Darbishire por Anthony Buckeridge

Two boys in an English boarding school get up to all sorts of well-natured shenanigans. A fun little book with slightly flat yet still enjoyable characters and a predictable but cozy plot: the boys are prone to trouble but not malice, and the teachers are stern yet loving. Idyllic early 20th century boarding school hijinx.

Jennings Follows A Clue por Anthony Buckeridge

What a delight! Full of laughs and surprises. I'm thrilled to find this new (to me) author. I found a short article where several authors shared the books they loved from childhood. I'm sad that I can't remember which author it was that mentioned the Jennings books in the same paragraph as the William stories by Crompton and Enid Blyton's work. I have loved Crompton and Blyton but was unfamiliar with Buckeridge and went at once to fill the gap in my education. Boy, am I glad I did! I'll be searching out the others in this fabulous series.… (más)
