I enjoyed this book. It was a bit heavy on the terminology, but that didn't really hinder my progress or annoy me in any way. The book is a combination of a few things as is related in the preface. It is a collection of stories about people who have lost a sense such as sight or hearing and it describes how their lives are affected. I probably won't read it again, but the collected stories are pretty good.

The terminology comes into play when the author describes how a gene expresses itself and other such things.

All in all it was quite interesting. Four out of five.

Summary:

This book was about how animals communicate and work together for the betterment of the group they live in.

Personal Reaction:

I had 3 prairie dogs for pets and they loved to play and talk, but what like liked about them the most is they were very protective of the pack, which included me. Whenever someone came into the house they would give the danger alarm to warn me and the others of the pack.

Classroom Extension Ideas:

1. Have the children tell of a time when they saw animals working together.
2. Ask the kids if they have pets do they think their pet is a team player.

Do Animals Migrate?
By Faith Hickman Brynie
“I Like Reading” series for 1st Grade/3rd Grade
2010, Enslow Publishers, Inc
Review by Debra L Scott, 12/14/2011

Interesting and factual reader about animal migration. The “I Like Reading” series has a blended text format, with simple first grade vocabulary in the first paragraph, along with a pronunciation guide for difficult words (wildebeasts –WIL-duh beests). After this is a box with more advanced information, suitable for third grade level reading, or for reading along with the child.

Do Animals Migrate? looks at why animals, birds, even insects and sea life, move about. From the well-known snow geese migrations between north and south, to the curious jellyfish migrations between shallow and deep water, curious readers will find a lot to spark their curiosity. Even I was surprised to find out that red crabs live in the forest and only go to the ocean to mate and lay eggs!

I highly recommend this useful and educational book!

This science book was written for a younger classroom. The experiments are a bit easier and contain less complex materials and procedures. These can be done in six minutes to adapt to the shorter attention span of younger children. I felt that the illustrations in this book we very undeveloped and needed to be better, especially for the younger children.
